Why MRI is useful for knee assessment

MRI can show many soft-tissue structures that are not assessed in the same way on a standard X-ray.

What MRI can show

A knee MRI can visualise structures including the menisci, cruciate and collateral ligaments, articular cartilage, tendons, bone marrow and surrounding soft tissues. The exact protocol depends on the clinical question.

When context matters

An acute twisting injury, persistent swelling, instability, locking, focal pain or post-operative symptoms may lead to different questions. The request should describe the side, mechanism and suspected problem where possible.

MRI is one part of assessment

Imaging findings should be interpreted alongside the patient’s history and clinical examination. Some MRI findings can be incidental and may not explain the symptoms on their own.

After the scan

The written report summarises the imaging observations and impression. A clinician can then use that information with the physical examination and symptoms to decide what follow-up is appropriate.
