Before you leave home
Read the appointment confirmation carefully. Preparation varies by examination, so follow the instructions for your specific scan rather than relying on general advice.
If you have an implant, previous surgery, metal in the body, possible pregnancy or another MRI safety concern that has not already been discussed, contact the clinic before travelling.
Arrival and safety checks
At check-in, your identity and appointment details may be confirmed. MRI safety screening is normally reviewed before you enter the controlled scan environment.
You may need to remove jewellery, watches, phones, cards, hearing devices or clothing with metal depending on the clinic’s instructions.
Positioning for the scan
The radiography team positions the body area being examined and may use a dedicated coil around or near that area. Comfortable positioning matters because movement can reduce image quality.
You can expect noise while images are being acquired. The team will explain how they communicate with you during the examination.
When the scan finishes
The images still need to be reviewed and reported after the appointment. Before leaving, make sure you understand how the report and images will be made available and who should discuss the findings with you.
